My Other Writing
Like most writers, I don't limit
myself to a particular form of writing. My favorite forms are
blog posts, essays and short stories, but I have also dabbled in
poetry, particularly haiku and sestinas, and flash fiction. I
believe that experience with a variety of forms helps to enhance my
favorite forms. Poetry gives me practice in creating dense
imagery. Fiction writing elements used within nonfiction pieces
make them more engaging for both writer and reader. Blogging,
which in my mind is an expansion of the essay form, gives the
writer a nimbleness in stringing words together.
Several (a
bunch? too many?) examples of my other writing can be found under the
sidebar links on this page. They are pdf files. While I was selecting
from my stockpile of writing, I discovered that when I seriously began
writing in my private time, I started with essays. After a while, I
moved to poetry, although I was still writing some essays. Then I
drifted into short stories, including my Greenville series. Mixed in, I
tried my hand at flash fiction and a couple of manifestos. The
pieces I've selected run roughly in date order, with the earlier pieces
at the top. (There may be exceptions to this, so don't take the chronology thing as gospel.)
